Gurvich Detective Agency

76 years of providing the best protection in the Gulf South:

When our founder, S.C. Gurvich, retired from the FBI in 1930, there was no doubt about the kind of service we were committed to provide. The Gurvich System's, "never compromise" corporate philosophy has been fortified by over seventy five years in the contract security business. That's why we've prospered through the Depression, World War II, and every other challenge the contract security business can present. Of course, we're used to operating in a tough world. (New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana are ranked as the 5th most dangerous region in the country), but we're also an industry leader in the war on terrorism. Whether dealing with everyday petty criminals or the complicated regulations of the Maritime Transportation Security Act, we've got the expertise and ability to protect our customers.

A rich history of achievement in prevention and protection:

1936 - Gurvich Detective Agency assisted in locating and apprehending Alvin Karpis, one of only four men ever designated as Public Enemy No. 1 by the FBI.

1963-1984 - Gurvich Detective Agency devised and maintained the Missing Cargo Report System for the Port of New Orleans. This was the first systematic approach to reporting and analyzing cargo theft claims in the United States, and is still imitated in many ports today.

1969 - Gurvich Detective Agency developed information leading to the arrest of a multi-state conspiracy involving fuel thefts on marine waterways and terminals. At the time this was the largest fuel theft conspiracy ever uncovered by private or public law enforcement agencies.

1967-1973 - Gurvich Detective Agency was actively involved in the local investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

1971-1975 - Gurvich Detective Agency acted as a special grand jury advisor to the U.S. Attorney's Office during a series of investigations into interstate and foreign cargo thefts and racketeering.

1972 - Gurvich Detective Agency developed information leading to the discovery and breakup of an organized criminal conspiracy in the metropolitan New Orleans area. This information would later result in numerous prosecutions in New Orleans, New York and New Jersey.

1996 - Gurvich Detective Agency aided U.S. Customs in solving a criminal conspiracy by eleven waterfront workers, resulting in the recovery of more than $350,000.00 in stolen cargo and equipment.

The Gurvich family of prevention agencies; New Orleans Private Patrol, Louisiana Private Patrol, and The Gurvich Detective Agency have been a part of living and doing business in the Gulf South for seventy five years. We are the Home Team. Every one of our senior corporate officers, managers, supervisors, detectives, and security officers lives and works in the community. 100% of your security dollars stay in the local economy.

Customer Service:
We're the company you'll enjoy doing business with. Every step of the way you'll have a representative to answer your questions and attend to your security needs. An executive will be appointed to oversee your account. An operations manager will inspect your post and periodically check with your managers to assure quality service. You'll have a chief dispatcher to handle personnel matters and schedules, and our business manager will provide you with computerized billing statements at prearranged intervals. They'll be backed by a team of experts in human resources, criminal and civil investigations, physical security surveys, risk management and loss prevention. If you need assistance, we'll have someone available to help twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The Trained Professionals:
We hire about one in every twenty applicants, and before a candidate is brought on board a thorough background check has to be completed. At least two independent criminal history checks are made through different public law enforcement agencies, and the job offer is contingent upon the applicant passing a physical exam as well as a comprehensive drug screen. We test for all ten of the major drug families.

Once on board, a new security officer is not left to fend for himself. There's a lot to be learned, and to avoid any conflict of interest we let an independent training agency handle the basics. Every one of our security officers has been individually certified and tested on the required classroom subjects and trained on the firing range by a police instructor. Our officers receive training on the importance of physical appearance, professionalism, conflict resolution, reasonable force concepts, probable cause, arrest powers, self-defense, report writing, fire prevention and reaction, firearms proficiency and safety. And that isn't the end of the training process. We don't just meet the standards set by the Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners. We exceed them! There's still an extensive in-house orientation process ahead and plenty of on-the-job training to be completed before deploying into the field. And every one of our officers is going to be retrained annually. You can count on it!

Annual employee turnover in the security business is more than 200%. You'll be glad to know that our officers tend to stay. In fact, 80% of them have been with us for a year or more. Our personnel department has an open door policy, and we make it a point to be considerate of even the newest recruit. This isn't something you see very often in the security industry, but then we don't believe loyalty is a thing of the past, and neither do our employees.

Insurance:
We realize our customers are concerned about liability issues. So we made sure that we're backed by the best in the industry, underwritten by established United States insurance carriers with an A+ rating. Although our basic limits are high by industry standards, we've got umbrella coverage too. And unlike most of our competitors, we also feature first and third party bonds, for our protection - and yours.
